Background of the Study
The availability of quality sports facilities in educational institutions plays a critical role in the holistic development of students, contributing not only to their physical well‐being but also to their social and emotional growth (Ade, 2023). In Maiduguri Local Government Area, secondary schools face unique challenges in maintaining and expanding sports infrastructure. Over the past decades, increased urbanization and shifting government priorities have led to resource allocation that often overlooks sports development (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines how the current state of sports facilities influences students’ participation in physical activities and overall school performance. Many schools in this region struggle with outdated equipment, insufficient maintenance, and limited space, which collectively restrict students from engaging in structured sports programs. Although government policies have emphasized the importance of holistic education, practical implementation at the local level remains problematic. Recent investigations have noted that inadequate sports facilities are directly linked to decreased student motivation and a decline in the physical fitness levels of adolescents (Okoro, 2025). Furthermore, the lack of adequate infrastructure has broader implications, such as reduced opportunities for talent development and poor competitive performance in inter-school events. Stakeholders, including parents, educators, and local authorities, have raised concerns over the disparities between schools that enjoy modern amenities and those with obsolete or non-existent facilities. The literature indicates that the absence of safe, well-equipped environments hinders the effective delivery of physical education and can negatively impact students’ attitudes toward lifelong fitness and teamwork (Chukwu, 2023). In addition, the socio-economic challenges faced by the Maiduguri community exacerbate these issues, as limited funding and competing educational priorities further constrain the upgrading of sports facilities. The interplay between economic factors, government policies, and community expectations necessitates a comprehensive evaluation of the current state of sports infrastructure. This research intends to bridge the gap in existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the availability and adequacy of sports facilities in Maiduguri’s secondary schools, thereby informing policy adjustments and future investments. Ultimately, the study aims to promote an integrated approach that recognizes physical education as a vital component of academic excellence and community development (Umar, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite national and state policies advocating for enhanced physical education, secondary schools in Maiduguri continue to experience significant shortcomings in sports facility provision. Many institutions operate with limited resources, outdated equipment, and insufficient maintenance practices, leading to underutilization of available spaces. The consequences of this neglect include low student participation in sports, diminished physical fitness, and missed opportunities for developing teamwork and leadership skills (Lawal, 2025). A gap persists between policy formulation and practical implementation at the grassroots level, where economic constraints and infrastructural decay undermine the potential benefits of sports programs. In addition, disparities in facility quality among schools have created an uneven playing field, where some students are deprived of the benefits associated with regular physical exercise. This issue is further compounded by inadequate funding and poor oversight by educational authorities, leaving many schools without proper planning or support for sports infrastructure development. The lack of adequate sports facilities not only affects the physical health of students but also impacts their academic performance and social interaction, ultimately hindering holistic development. As such, the problem is multifaceted, involving issues of resource allocation, policy implementation, and infrastructural management. This study is designed to investigate these challenges in detail by identifying the key factors that limit the availability and quality of sports facilities in secondary schools within Maiduguri Local Government Area. By critically evaluating the current state of these facilities, the research seeks to uncover systemic issues that contribute to educational disparities and provide recommendations for sustainable improvements (Bello, 2023).
